The Risk Officer is responsible for proactively identifying, assessing, monitoring, and mitigating risks across the Sacco to ensure safe operations, protection of members’ funds, regulatory compliance, and long term financial sustainability. The role supports the implementation of effective risk management frameworks in line with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement risk management strategies aligned with the Sacco’s strategic objectives.
Monitor internal and external risk factors and maintain business continuity plans.
Identify emerging risks from regulations, products, customer segments, and operational channels.
Conduct risk assessments and maintain updated risk registers in line with regulatory requirements.
Develop and implement risk monitoring and reporting frameworks with mitigation strategies.
Perform risk assessments for existing and proposed branches and operational units.
Prepare and present risk reports to management and the Board with actionable recommendations.
Collaborate with internal audit and compliance teams to strengthen internal controls.
Promote a risk aware culture through staff training and awareness initiatives.
Perform any other duties assigned by management or the Board.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Accounting, or a related field.
Professional qualifications such as CPA K, ACCA, or risk related certifications are required.
Certifications such as Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager, Financial Risk Manager, Professional Risk Manager, ICA, or IRM are an added advantage.
Membership in a recognized professional body such as ICPAK is required.
Must meet Chapter 6 requirements of the Constitution of Kenya.
Experience
Minimum of five years experience in risk, audit, or compliance within a regulated financial institution.
Key Performance Indicators
Effective implementation of the enterprise risk management framework and annual risk plan.
Maintenance of an updated and comprehensive risk register with tracked mitigation actions.
Reduction in risk exposure and incidents through proactive monitoring.
Timely submission of risk and compliance reports to management and the Board.
Improved risk awareness and culture across the organization.
Compliance with regulatory requirements and applicable laws.
Effective management of key risk indicators and portfolio risks.
